How the First Nations live in Harmony with Nature

The class read the book, Salmon Boy. This legend teaches how every season produces different foods and how each season is suited to different activities.  The students have taken notes from the book and then shared what they learned through a Spark Video presentation.

Please watch some of the videos and leave some comments in the Google form connected with each video.

Learning more about Dugout Canoes during Library

In addition to reading about dugout canoes students were given the opportunity to watch a few videos about dugout canoes.

A few videos came from the Aboriginal Tourism BC Website:

Dugout Canoes: A Master Carver
Dugout Canoes: A Family Affair

There is also this time lapse video of making a dug canoe. This example is not for a typical Northwest Coast Canoe made by the indigenous people of the area. It does however give a good idea of how big a task is to make a dugout canoe.

Northwest Coastal First Nations Canoes

In our library class we read Jason's New Dugout Canoe. It is a story that describes how some Northwest Coast indigenous peoples make canoes.  We reviewed all the steps after we read the book. Students were then provided with three scripts about the canoe making process. Below are the videos the students made. This will is the first time most of the students have used i Pads to independently create an Adobe Spark video.

Inuit Fishing

This week Division 6 read the story Fishing With Grandma. It is about an Inuit grandmother teaching her grandchildren to fish. They learn both traditional and modern ice fishing skills. In Inuit culture children learn many values and life skills from their elders. Watch our video below to here about what we learned.

Inuit Hunting

We read and discussed our first story during our library learning commons time. From each story we read we are trying to learn:

  • Why are stories important to indigenous people?
  • Why do Elders play an important part in the lives of First Peoples?
  • What values were significant for local First Peoples?

This is our first attempt at making a summary of what we learned using a program called Adobe Spark Video.
